Aggettivi numerali

In inglese, gli aggettivi numerali, più conosciuti come numeri, hanno la stessa funzione di quelli italiani: esprimere una quantità (aggettivi numerali cardinali) o esprimere la posizione in una graduatoria (aggettivi numerali ordinali).

Numeri cardinali e ordinali

I numeri cardinali sono quelli usati normalmente per indicare il numero delle cose che ci circondano.

There are three apples on the table.

I numeri ordinali, invece, sono quelli usati per stilare classifiche, graduatorie.

Essi sono composti da una radice formata da un numero cardinale e dal suffisso -th e sono generalmente preceduti dall'articolo the. Solo the first, the second, the third e i loro composti, differiscono dalla regola base. Solitamente, i numeri ordinali si abbreviano, scrivendo in numero in cifre e le ultime due lettere scritte all'apice o subito dopo.

The first → 1st
The fifth → 5th

Eccezioni

Alcuni numeri ordinali presentano delle variazioni rispetto alla regola. Ad esempio:

five → fifth
nine → ninth
twelve → twelfth
twenty → twentieth

Inoltre, nei numeri superiori a 20, le unità si aggiungono alle decine con un trattino (-).

21 → twenty-one.
45 → forty-five.
